Columbia Middle School Physical Education Syllabus
Goal: Fitness for Life
Michigan Department of Education, grade level expectations content expectations (G.LE.C.S.) include:
1. Knowledge and content, including assessment
2. Movement patterns and motor skills, including skill assessment
3. Physical fitness and activity, establish personal goals, asses progress
4. Personal and social behavior and values
Expectations for a successful PE experience
Take care of yourself, commit to personal growth, compete with compassion and cooperation
What does this look like?
Respect and honor rules. Share opportunities with others, Compliment worthy efforts of others, Do your Best, Use strategy over strength, use common sense.
School Rules/ Nurtured Heart Approach
1. No disregarding quiet sign
2. No running or speed walking in halls
3. No loud voices or inappropriate language
4. No touching others or their property
5. No disrespecting school property
Additional: All school rules apply in locker rooms, gymnasium and fields of play. Students are responsible for the safe keeping of issued gym locks. Students will be charged $5.00 for losing locks.
Dress Code
1. Must dress everyday even when excused from active participation.
2. Athletic shoes should be in good shape
3. Tops and bottoms that allow freedom of movement, generally includes t-shirt, sweatshirts, shorts with no zipper, sweatpants. Clothing that permits inappropriate exposure of of skin or undergarments will not be permitted. Final determination is at the discretion of school staff.
4. Keep your personal belongings secure in a locked locker at all times.
Injuries/Illness
A parent note will excuse a student from full participation for three days of PE class periods. If more time is needed to recover, a Doctor's note is required. Students will still be expected to dress during this time of recovery.
Grading
Students earn three points each day for successful choices regarding effort, participation, and preparedness. Monthly fitness run (one mile), skills and knowledge tests are also a part of the overall assessment.
